My work in the field began over 25 years ago, focusing on autism and related social learning challenges.. I have since had the opportunity to teach and learn alongside individuals with a variety of learning profiles. I believe in collaborating as a team to help each student embrace their strengths and access their potential in all areas of development.
I am a certified wellness, social emotional learning and yoga instructor. Much of my work focuses on social cognitive therapy and behavior support. I'm passionate about developing programs that balance the relationship between mental, physical and emotional health.
I understand how hard taking the first step toward a wellness program can be. Throughout my personal journey, I have worked through physical ailments and injuries, as well as post traumatic stress disorder. One philosophy I embrace in my daily life is that "with one breath, you can begin again" (spoken by my first meditation teacher).
SEL connects children to the life skills they need to learn, grow and thrive in the classroom and beyond. My enrichment program provides a space for children to process their feelings, embrace their strengths and access support when they experience challenges. I use a curriculum that targets developmental milestones needed for building self-awareness, healthy relationships, responsible decision-making and more. My approach includes interactive games that also support the development of speech and motor skills, creating a multi-sensory, whole-child approach.
Classes are tailored for each group, based on age, developmental stage and individual needs. Vocabulary and concepts are shared with parents and teachers on a weekly basis to support learning across environments. Some of the lessons that younger groups focus on include communication and turn-taking, while older children explore more complex concepts such as inclusion and the ripple effect of kindness. Schools and families may also request special topics.
Students explore weekly themes through hands-on activities such as games, stories, songs, role playing, group discussions and purposeful play.
With SEL, kids learn strategies for developing:
-empathy and understanding
-self-regulation
-perspective taking
-flexible thinking
-focus and attention
-executive function
-and more!
Research demonstrates that an education that promotes SEL has a positive impact on a wide range of lifelong outcomes, including academic performance, healthy relationships, mental wellness and more. Some research suggests that social emotional activities might be the most important work children can do in their early years! My curriculum is aligned with CASEL who leads the field of evidence-based SEL practices from preschool through high school. https://casel.org/
SEL is not only important for children on an individual level, it’s also of great benefit to their larger communities. When more children are equipped with social emotional skills, it creates a better environment for all children, teachers and staff!
Yoga for Teachers provides the benefits of a yoga practice built into your school day. Typically offered during teacher lunch breaks, this class is built around your schedule within a range of 45-60 minutes. Together, we’ll stretch, strengthen and balance both our physical and mental selves, toward the goal of a calm yet energized state for the remainder of the day. Before and after school classes are also offered (depending on day, time and location).
As a former elementary school teacher, one thing I never felt I had enough time in the day for was a consistent self-care routine. With ongoing responsibilities and emotional investment long after dismissal, this is the kind of job you take home with you. I started closing the curtains and door of my classroom during my lunch break and unrolling my yoga mat in front of the images and sounds of the ocean I'd put up on my smartboard. Those 45-50 minutes created an immediate change and the positive impact continued to grow. What I experienced was refreshed mental and physical energy for the remainder of the day and an improved outlook overall. In a job that you give so much of yourself to, it’s important to also value what you give to yourself. Committing to my own yoga practice during the school day, allowed me to replenish my reserves and prevent the feeling of being depleted. My students picked up on my new, balanced self, which led to healthier relationships, perspectives towards learning and academic growth. I am passionate about sharing the transformative effects of this journey with as many educators as I can…
I've designed a variety of specialty programs from Sensory Storytime, hosted at a local library, to Social Flexibility Yoga, housed in a boutique studio. I also offer parent trainings, professional development and support groups on a variety of topics. If I don't currently offer the program you're looking for, we can create it together!
